Line by Line has a broad musical palette, having some very strong third stream/classical pieces, but also fusion, contemporary jazz, and especially hard bop with a modern electric bass-focused twist. Even in the more jazz oriented pieces, Pattitucci displays his keen sense of classical line and counterpoint (especially evident in the interplay between tenor Chris Potter and guitarist Adam Rogers on "Agitato"), and on the pure post bop pieces, he gives a good demonstration of his technical virtuosity. The strings do take over on the more classically oriented pieces. On "Evidence," Rogers adds some distortion to the guitar and channels some serious John Scofield. The variety is nice with lots of interesting individual pieces, but the album as a whole can seem a bit disjointed at times. This is a good one for programming just whichever cuts fit whatever mood you're in at the moment.
