Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.3/100, a mean average of 75.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.8.

Yeah, it's a really fun listen. Round and round is the obvious standout, but Fright night is a personal favourite of mine.

This is a really unfair way to rate an album, but I'm going to do it anyway. Pom Pom was my first introduction to Ariel Pink, and one of the main things I liked about that album was how crisp the production sounded and how it brought out all the intricacies of the songs. On this album however, the lo-fi aspect drowns out most of the details of the songs. Now I'm not bashing the fact that the recording is "lo-fi"; I love tons of lo-fi artists. But amongst the artists I love in that genre (Neutral Milk Hotel, GBV, Sparklehorse, Daniel Johnston) the lo-fi production serves to enhance the mood of the songs. In all the artists I mentioned, the dirty, gritty production fits in perfectly with the song structures, which are often halfbaked to begin with. In this album, though, it seems like there are fully fledged songs that just happened to be recorded poorly for the sake of it, the result being a bunch of songs that I wish I could hear better. So yeah, the songwriting is great and it's pretty eccentric, but the muffled production really turns me off of it.

it's silly fun! just relax and sing along! sure ariel pink isn't the greatest singer but his voice (and everything else) is supposed to be goofy. if you take this album seriously you missed the point!
Really good

This marks Ariel Pink's jump from completely lo-fi to well recorded lo-fi. The word original doesn't fit Ariel's music. It's just a big schizophrenic pot of the 20th century pop.
"Soundtrack to Love Boat" is the most accurate description of this album that I've read so far.
(oh, but don't get me wrong, I like it)
Thank God for the internet I would not have to buy this album. These would be lost money. :((
Mozart, spot on mate.
I actually loved this album before I even bothered figuring out the lyrics. And they just made it even better.
"Sexual Bendiness" - hahaha!
There are certain things I have a soft spot for: 1) Songs which are simultaneously funny and emotive, 2) Songs which have sections (not just verse, chorus, verse), and 3) Sexual bendiness. Album has all three. 2 means that it repays repeated listens like a mofo.
