Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Slight bias here as this was one of only two albums I got to listen to live this year, but my word what an album. Clark has always been talented at making accessible music with daring sonic textures, but this is next-level. A passive listener will experience a fun dancy record, but delving further reveals layered references to the evolution of electronic music over the last few decades, showing a changing British identity through the sounds we choose to lose ourselves to.
