Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 9% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.2/100, a mean average of 75.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 10.7.

Man I really like this, one of their most interesting albums.
Not really following the MG pattern, this album really branches out into new territory. There were limits placed on instrumentation, most specifically that JD could not use a guitar on the record. It clearly opened some musical doors.
Two years ago, The Mountain Goats taught us to face an opponent with their album "Beat The Champ". John Darnielle, who is considered one of the best lyricists in the world of indie rock, and his band come back with a new concept album entitled "Goths" and which pays tribute to... the Gothic. And if you listened to the album, you will notice that there is no guitar, just a piano and a Fender Rhodes leading the dance. There are some very successful songs such as "Unicorn Tolerance", "Wear Black" and "Rage of Travers" that do not hesitate to go to smooth jazz. We will have the impression to revisit the time of All Eternals Deck so this album is incredibly well polished and the climax is clearly reached on "For The Portuguese Goth Metal Bands". With this sixteenth MG album, you will not be afraid to be Gothic anymore.
8/10
Best track: "Rain In Soho"
I liked the soulful music and horns but the esoteric and detailed lyrics about goths and 90s culture went over my head and wasn't something that I could relate to.
This album will probably go down as 2017's most overlooked album. This album is superb. This album digs so much deeper than what you would originally think, given the subject matter. It's funny, original and will be nostalgic for some. Will definitely be in my top three albums of the year. LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM.
