Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. This is possibly my favourite, if not the finest, ever album made by a Spanish recording artist. Joan Manuel Serrat is, one of the world's greatest living singer-songwriters. The title track "Mediterráneo" is beyond doubt one of my favourite songs written in the Spanish language. It will be on most lists of the most emblemnatic songs written in Spain.

Grande compositor e cantor!
An magic album, the masterpiece of popular spanish music. Serrat is a singer-songwriter whose peers are Brassens, Brel, Paoli....Prodigious lyrics, great arrangements.
