This is a huge improvement over The Blueprint 3 and Magna Carta Holy Grail, but it's still not particularly good. And this is coming from somebody who would probably place Jay-Z in my top ten artists of all-time. His flow is just so fucking clumsy these days. He used to be able to rap very nimbly and precisely, but these days he sounds like he's lost any and all ability to ride a beat. Honestly, it sounds like he's drunk and tripping over himself, trying to remember his lyrics. I also cannot get behind his freedom-through-capitalism worldview, which has obviously always been there to some extent in his rhymes, but has now become this all-encompassing, quasi-religious way of life for him that I am diametrically opposed to. But whatever, at least the beats aren't terrible.

BEA needs to get over it's elitism when it comes to commercially successful hip hop artists. If you mention you like Jay Z, Kanye, Beyonce, or Solange here you get a poorly ranked chart and comments marked "unhelpful" just because something doesn't appeal you maybe it means it's not for your elitist ass doesn't mean it's bad art.

Jay Z's not my favorite hip hop artist nor is this even my favorite Jay album, but this is a good project. I'm almost tempted to bump it up 5-10 stars to compensate for the elitists here underrating it b/c they feel smug as they switch tabs from BEA to reddit and anthony fantano (even his ass gave this an 8)

This is sort of a follow up project to Lemonade addressing Jay's own flaws. It is one of the most personal records from Jay in some time. The samples are done well and the production is reasonably accessible. Really great addition to his catelogue that has had quite a few weak records the past decade or so. It was nice to see him return to a more accessible soul-influenced sound and flows that didn't need to prove anything. It is just great to see Jay making some good music.

I wouldn't say I'm blown away by this, so I'm not going to rate it higher than it should be. It's more of a "oh wow this is nice that he made this" feeling - it is just irritating to see all the elistists here underrating a commercial hip hop album yet again. I like Jay Z and Beyonce even though I know they use their personal lives to further their career. Sue me. Still better than the other pop from like likes of Taylor Swift and Miley. Sue me.

All these terrible comments from people who know nothing about hip-hop. This is a great album that shines lyrically, sonically and thematically.

Did this site even listen to this album properly?
This is a great album with strong racial, social and economic teachings and undertones. Good to see from jay-z.
To me, this is his best album.
