Nostalgia drenched pop music in hoc to chill wave that wears its 80s credentials proudly - especially Prince. Synth pop that's dream pop and vice versa, just don't forget to take your dancing shoes with you.
Sweet cocktail of an album. Strong songs all the way through with a very cool delivery. This album and others popular in urban enclaves at the time -- e..g. Washed Out, Neon Indian, Small Black, Yacht, Yeosayer -- were the soundtrack for life in the bubble of Obama's blue America, especially on the coasts. This moment in American indie rock might be remembered for its smug, plastic, escapist sensibility -- thus the 80s nostalgia. The music is soaked in leisure and a profound lack of concern for the world outside the gentrified urban havens of its audience. Not much angst or compassion here, but great pop nonetheless. Of course all that lovely oblivion would end abruptly in 2016.
