For some strange reason I don't listen to Andrew Bird more than I do. This music is so delightfully sophisticated, and there is so much richness in the lyrics and in the songs' timing and orchestral shifts. I will come back, and I see why people complain about his underratedness. But there is that "lack of a killer punch" ... and the whistling. But all in all, uniquely enjoyable.

A nice contemplative listen, with thoughtful lyrics and a stylistic quirkiness, but lacking a killer punch.

It's hard to fully appreciate what Andrew Bird does without seeing him live on stage, where he plays violin, whistles, sings, and uses looping technology to lay down beats and riffs. But this album is the best recorded representation of what he does. It's a very fine collection of indie folk tunes, headed by the swirling, crashing "Fake Palindromes." And yes, folks, there will be snacks.

How did I not discover this sooner? It's brilliant, the lyricism is fantastic.

"Mysterious Production of Eggs" is one of the most spectacularly consistent musical experiences of the 2000s. From start to finish, this seamless record is full of intricate pizzicato loops and provocative musings of life's banalities and quirks, the mundane and the interesting. This is his easiest to engage with a I recommend it whole-heartedly to any listener even if I prefer "Armchair Apocrypha" and "Noble Beast". Key tracks for me are "Tables and Chairs" and "Opposite Day" for that amazing loop in the chorus.

great album

This was one of my favorite albums when I was in high school. I played violin and loved indie rock and this album convinced me I didn't have to play guitar to be cool (I mean, I was wrong, but at least it got me through high school).

"you're what happens when two substances collide". haha. This line from "a nervous tic motion of the head" off Andrew Bird's "the mysterious production of eggs" is pretty indicative of the album. He brings intelligence, a good vocabulary, fun turns of phrase and a bit of kooky wit under the guise of his indie folk/pop. i just love the moment in "tables and chairs" where he announces "we're gonna live on our wits / we're gonna throw away survival kits, / trade butterfly-knives for adderal / and that's not all / ooh-ooh, there will be snacks there will". haha, an Hors d'oeuvres table at the end of the world. "fake palindromes" is as raucous as folk rock touched with violins and xylophone can be,, with crazy scenes like "she says i like long walks and sci-fi movies / if you're six foot tall and east coast bred / some lonely night we can get together / and i'm gonna tie your wrists with leather / and drill a tiny hole into your head ". The album's beautifully sweeping at times like witnessing a lightly-breezy, sunny day across a grassy knoll, like on "masterfade", but IMO, this quality is his weakest strength. Turns of phrase are his strong suit, like "Today was supposed to be the day / Molecules decide to change their form / Laws of physics lose their sway / Youthful indiscretion now is suddenly the norm / With the good kids sprouting horns" in "opposite day". And remember, there will be snacks!
