Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 67.8/100, a mean average of 65.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 65.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.5.

A brilliant album and return to form by Simple Minds (along with Big Music). A magical album with great creativity in the instruments lead by Charlie Burchil and great voice by Jim Kerr. The drumming is great also by Mel Gayner and newcomer (also legend in percussion) Cherisse Osei. The album is strong from start to finish with The Signal And The Noise and Sense Of Discovery being some favourites. An under rated album that deserves more credit but it has been the bands most successful album since 1995's Good News.. album. Brilliant!!!
Just recently received the coloured vinyl version as a Birthday present. There are some nice tracks on this album and there certainly aren't any I don't like. That said, there aren't any tracks which made me 'sit up' like 'Big Music' did. I think I need to give it a few more spins to let it flourish. 'Big Music' took me back to 'New Gold Dream' and 'Once Upon A Time'. This album moves further away from that style but I understand that they need to keep it fresh.
