Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 69.9/100, a mean average of 67.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 67.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.3.

Following the excellent Cantamos, their final record on Epic, Poco's debut for ABC/MCA is their most polished effort yet, with candy sweet melodies, strings featured on the ballads and emphasis on the harmonies. Their faces are presented clearly on the cover, giving me the impression that ABC was trying to promote the hell out of them.

The highlight from bassist Timothy B Schmit is the opener Keep on Tryin', followed by the Rusty Young penned Lovin' Arms and the sweet and simple Makin' Love. Rusty also makes his lead vocal debut on his song Us. Cotton returns with the decent
originals Down on the Quarter and Georgia Bind My Ties, and as usual, his contributions make Poco releases worth while, although they are less impressive than Young's fine contributions.

The bands connections to Steely Dan come to a head here. Apart from sharing the same label and singer (Schmit was a regular backup singer for Steely Dan), the band picks up the appropriate Dallas, Steely Dan's first forgotten West-coast flavored single. They don't justice and it fits nicely in this set.

Overall, the material is decent and more hooky and accessible than usual, but is not quite up to par with the brilliant songs on Cantamos or Crazy Eyes.

AVERAGE

PAUL COTTON: Georgia Bind My Ties
RUSTY YOUNG: Lovin' Arms
TIM SCHMIT: Keep on Tryin'

Este es uno de mis discos favoritos de Poco, y Keep On Tryin' me parece la mayor muestra del talento de Timothy B. Schmit y la cima de las armonías vocales del grupo.
