How did this material not find its way out of the vault for 55 years? Great stuff here!
Coltrane was rightfully famous both for his early traditional jazz mastery and his later avant garde explorations. This music on this album perfectly straddles the line between those periods, somehow being forward leaning and challenging while still being accessible. A genuine marvel and a welcome if belated addition to the Coltrane legacy as well as a meaningful historical document.
Nothing really stands out to me as much as some other albums from around this time like Giant Steps or Africa Brass but there's some great material from Coltrane's classic quartet at an interesting phase in his career.
