May21. When I listened to this when it came out I felt it was not up to their previous releases. Let's see how I see it after a couple of years have passed.
The title track opens the album and it is pretty good, showcasing both vocalists. 'Blackbird' sounds like it could have come off 'Crimson'. It is a decent song that seems to have escaped my attention the first time (despite being the first single). I love the slow, bass-driven parts that contrast with the full band bits on 'Demon and Division'. This one was an early favourite and I still love it.
'Little Help?' is a short ditty that flies by before the awesome stomp of 'I Can't Believe' grabs you by the scruff of the neck and reminds you of Alkaline Trio's great strengths. Everything just works on this song: another favourite.
What a cool, catchy start to 'Sweet Vampires' and guitar tone in 'Pale Blue Ribbon'. 'Stay' has a slower, laid-back vibe in the style of Dan's solo stuff.
'Throw Me to the Lions' pounds along at a nice pace, sounding like it could have been on 'Good Mourning'. Then the closer, 'Krystalline' takes you back to the acoustics of 'Maybe I'll Catch Fire'.
In all, there is something here for fans of any particular era of the band and more variety here than I initially thought, but still not enough to rival their best. 3.5/5
