Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 63.7/100, a mean average of 63.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 63.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 20.9.

While I do agree that this album isn’t boundary pushing, groundbreaking, or shy about showing its post-grunge influences, I still think it’s an underrated and solid pop rock release in the latter half of the 90s. The first three tracks are raw, emotional, relatable, and catchy. “Back 2 Good” is just a little bit too long and repetitive, but I still enjoy the lyrics, instrumentation, and Rob Thomas’s vocal performance. A few mediocre and derivative tracks in the album’s second half that make it slightly suffer, and then we finish it all off with the moving acoustic closer “Hang”, which has become one of my absolute favorite MB20 songs. Give this a listen while driving in the car and keep an open mind. It will grow on you.

There is a blandly efficient sameness to most of Matchbox 20's work that extends beyond just Thomas' vocals to the lyrical content, the soft rock instrumentation and the song composition. It all goes in one ear and out the other smoothly and painlessly enough, which always made the singles popular Top 40 radio filler, yet you'll forget what you've heard seconds later.

Straightforward rock n roll album that justifiably found its way into the mainstream in the late nineties. "Push" and "Real World" are quality tracks, but it's on "3 A.M." and "Back 2 Good" where the band really shines.

While a little simple and unoriginal, the album makes up for it with some consistently catchy and well written songs. I used to make fun of this band for being lame, but when it comes to this album I can't find many things that I dislike. This is quality, enjoyable 90's pop rock at its finest.

Best Tracks: 3am, Push, Back 2 Good

Matchbox 20 debut is straightforward mainstream blue-collar 90's pop/rock. It's singles made them extremely popular and the top half of the album is very good at what it does.

Tails off in the second half. The whole thing lacks originality and is a bit bland. Nothing here has a WOW factor.

Back 2 Good and Push are the highlights. 3 AM and Real World are simple catchy singles.

Damn is a personal favorite.

Cool singles. Not as awesome deep cuts. Not too bad overall.

Very good pop rock/alternative rock album. Best 10 songs average is 88,3/100 and the album can get very good 90/100. Best songs are "Long day", "Push", "Back 2 good" and "Kody" all 90/100. Most other songs pretty good 85/100. Favourite!

So good! There is only one or two songs on here I MIGHT skip over, and even those aren't bad songs. Great album.
