Above Average.

This independently-produced debut from Nanci Griffith is charming and intriguing. The production is hit or miss, but it best supports her on the dreamy Alabama Soft Spoken Blues. The original material is decent for a folk debut, but the charm here is mostly Griffith's captivating vocal performance. Very reminiscent of Joni Mitchell or Joan Baez, with barely a trace of Griffith's trademark lingering Texas drawl.

Eric Taylor, Griffith's husband at the time, appears here singing his original song "Dollar Matinee." He went on to release his gorgeous debut album "Shameless Love" just a few years after this release.

I recommend her follow-up independent albums over this, but this is still a worthy debut. This album was reissued in 2023 for streaming with the beautiful original artwork.

All but two songs written or co-written by Nanci Griffith.
