Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 79.3/100, a mean average of 78.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 79.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.8.

Perfect for background music during Halloween. I even love this more than the first Ambient Works album. Creepy yet beautiful and much darker and imo more interesting than the first one.

Some great tracks but no one should make an album this long.

It's okay music to study but I am not a fan of ambient music otherwise.

I recommend listening to this album in chunks rather than the whole way through. For me, this was quite an exciting experience and unlike anything i've heard before. This makes me want to go back and listen to Selected Works 85-92 again and again.

I had my reservations about "Selected Ambient Works Volume II" due to its gargantuan length, but it turned out to be utterly captivating due to its mysterious and otherworldly nature. Aphex Twin has crafted a colossal yet minimalist statement that coasts almost entirely on atmosphere rather than his usual techno beats; it works wonderfully because of how evocative each track is. My personal favourite from him and one of the best ambient records of all time.

I am about an hour in and I love Rhubarb. That track is incredible and songs like Weathered Stone and Cliffs are interesting tracks. But the rest are just me in a 6/10 range. I still think there are interesting ideas but I feel if these tracks could have gotten more tones or drums for the rest of the tracks to have more staying power. I see it being revolutionary but feels a bit passe.

I am a huge fan of the atmosphere, and game-changing impact that 85-92 had before this release. This album doesn't blow me away like that album did but it is a mesmerising listening experience. In Vol II you begin to hear Richard D James shift his ambient sounds from the comfortable, bliss-inducing embrace of his earlier music to creepier, darker ambience that would eventually take hold of some of his later work. But this album still has its beauty and it still envelopes you with bliss, it's just not quite as nurturing.
