I really like this album as it has focus and direction which was not on a few of their previous outings. My favourite would have to be Childhood's End - great feel, awesome lyrics and a typically haunting Gilmour solo.
Often overlooked, this is an excellent warm-up for Dark Side. It’s a soundtrack in name only, a little less experimental than past efforts and more song-oriented. “Burning Bridges” transports you; to me, there are few things more sonically beautiful than the voices of Gilmour and Wright, especially in harmony, and especially on the last verse of this song. “Childhood's End,” “Wots ..... Uh The Deal,” and “Free Four” are some of the band’s most accessible and interesting early songs, and there are some very interesting instrumental explorations like “Absolutely Curtains” and “Mudmen” here as well. The two semi-conjoined opening tracks are nice driving instrumentals.
This is most definitely a Floyd album with one foot in the past and one in the future. Burning Bridges sounds like it came out of a Meddle session, and the opening drum pattern for Childhood's End is well established as having been inspirational (if not just copied and pasted) for Time on DSOM. It is slightly heavier than much of their output, but this works well in the context of the album, and there are plenty of gentle moments too. Overlooked, yes. A classic, no. Worthy of attention, yes.
OK I know this is basically a soundtrack (and as such sounds differently to their other 1970s albums) but i really like this.. My favourite has to be Burning Bridges (I love Wright and Gilmour duets :) )
Absolutely underrated! If you don't hold it against their other classics and lower your expectations this album deserves more recognition. Childhood's End is top 5 Pink Floyd songs for me!
