Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 5% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.8/100, a mean average of 75.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.2.

I expected more based on a high rating and position, also being in the 1001 ALbums book it should have grabbed me more.
Some great tracks on this, but there's a bit too much filler on it for my liking (especially in the second half of the album). Highlights are Natural Blues, Porcelain and If Things Were Perfect. Very unique, very chilled, well worth a listen. But a bit overrated for me.
a classic.a beautiful album.lie down close your eyes and let your mind wander. chill.
Favorite Songs:Find My Baby, Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?, Bodyrock, Natural Blues, The Sky Is Broken
A unique and original for its day - there was just nothing like it at that time. Moby has had some fine albums since, but there's just something dynamic about "Play".
This is a great album with a lot of really good songs. It's a little rambling and long for my taste, however.
This is Moby's 5th album and explores electronic music mixed with southern gospel and soul in parts. The first 11 tracks are more like a greatest hits package rather than an actual album with no fewer than 8 smash hit home runs in "Honey" , "Run On" , "Bodyrock" , "Why Does My Heart . . ." , "Natural Blues" , "Porcelain" , "Southside" featuring Gwen Stefani and "Find My Baby" . Tracks 12 to 18 Moby pumps the breaks and closes things out with 7 slower atmospheric tracks
It's Moby AKA Richard Melville Hall New York born and bred , and is still making albums in 2018 . 'Play' remains his masterpiece
Do I Need To Hear This Album?
Absolutely ! 'Play' is one of the best albums from the 1990's and essential for all music fans
You must check out the 8 wonderful videos for the tracks listed above on YouTube. Each one is a mini masterpiece , the one for "Find My Baby" is hysterically funny with a crew of actual babies taking centre stage
Great album, but '18' is better, Best tracks 3, 4, 8, 11 and 14. And 18.
It's pretty good. I think I enjoy the sound in general more than the album as a whole. "Honey's" a decent opener, "Porcelain" is pretty beautiful, and "Why Does my Heart Feel so Bad" is pretty good, but that's about all I can say honestly. Everything else makes for a pretty enjoyable album that feels fun and interesting, but again, I just think it's pretty good. I would still recommend it though, I just don't feel like it's anything groundbreaking.
I actually found this pretty entertaining.
