Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 71.9/100, a mean average of 71.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 71.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.1.

One of the things I appreciate most about Joseph Arthur is his refusal to be pulled into the detached cynicism of hipsterdom, despite living among a community of artists (Arthur himself is a painter in addition to being a musician) during a time in history that encourages nihilism and retreating inward. Following the outbreak of the Iraq War, Arthur made an album that looks decidedly outward, and while it's not explicitly a political statement, Our Shadows Will Remain reminds us that traces of our choices today will reverberate far into the future. Which is both encouraging and utterly depressing. This theme is explored in an especially interesting way in "I Am," a song that points out the illusion of our importance while at the same time asks us to be present in this moment as if it were a matter of life and death: "To find out what you really are / You must wake up from this long night / Repeat the words 'I am.'"
