Singer/songwriter/novelist/poet/activist Rita Indiana and her backing alternative-merengue band Los Misterios write and perform songs about issues in Dominican life, from queer culture in Hispanic communities to emigration to the United States. Indiana's singing and rapping are quick, very accented, and full of slang, so the lyrics can be difficult to comprehend for Spanish speakers unless Dominican is your native accent.

Even if you can't understand the lyrics though, this album is worth a listen. Roughly translated as "The Escape", El Juidero contains many songs with beats and style which give the impression of running or fleeing.

I find a lot of similar musical themes to UK drum & bass and jungle genres, though I think it's a lot more likely that Indiana and jungle music drew from the same influences (reggae & other Caribbean styles), rather than Indiana drawing much influence directly from UK music. Or at least that's what I would have said were it not for the cover of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)".
