Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 71.2/100, a mean average of 70.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 70.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.5.

I'm an Andy Kaufman fan, so all that came to my mind as I listened was TONY CLIFTON. It's different from other releases in early 2021, so that's a plus.
85 to 90/100 (The sombre atmosphere of this album is so deep, so thick, so remarkably transfixing that there is a good chance you will start playing it and briefly feel like you have left your time and space and become someone else.)
For some reason this album makes me think of an old man, drifting off and away out of consciousness as he lays on his death bed. In his final moments he hears the music and sees the faces and feels the attachments of his youth. And there they all are, ghostly shapes with half-remembered faces, dancing and laughing and walking and talking one final time with him. And the old man is smiling and he sheds a final tear as he drifts away.
This album is bitter-sweet, and the sounds remind me of far off memories, transient and aching reminiscences. The horns sound far away, the pianos sound like they haven't felt the pleasure of being played for decades as their chords reverberate and bounce around and become ambient tones, drifting around in search of someone dear and lost.
This albums drips with atmosphere. Strangely, the opening track seems so cartoonish, especially in comparison to what is to come, you may be led to believe you are about to embark on a sort of Black Rider-esque journey into the absurd. As you continue on, and sink deeper and deeper into the ghostly universe of this album, the opener begins to make more sense in context.
Knox's vocals are somewhat akin to Scott Walker. Not so much in Walker's power and charisma, but in the way the 2 men dramatically and theatrically croon and deliver their words. The music is somewhat cabaret I suppose. Mixed with piano-heavy slow jazz-y sounds, some baroque sounds are present and perhaps a certain ambience is prevalent as well.
I was utterly caught off guard by the richness and power of this album. I was not expecting to be transported to another time and place as thoroughly as I was. If you want to hear some dusty, atmospheric, balladry which doesn't really seem to be from this century not to mention this year, I strongly recommend this beautiful record.
