Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 68.6/100, a mean average of 65.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 65.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 22.6.

AOTW #6: One To Rule Them All (2/9)

Dread Sovereign deliver a master class in Doom on Alchemical Warfare. Epic, diverse, dynamic & well crafted. The kind of album that gives you chills up your spine because everything is just so perfect. So good. The kind that makes you wish you were back in ninth grade so you could pass notes in class like secrets about this special thing you discovered. Dread Sovereign seem to take in the whole world of Doom in and then breath it back out with a fresh, novel spin. With nods to to the past as diverse as Hellhammer and Reagars' Saint Vitus but in ways that that don't seem like a retread.

This is one of those album’s where you discover a new best song every time you listen to it. Just face it. You don’t need to worship Satan to realize that this is going to be one of the best metal albums of the year. Mark it down. I'm calling it here in February.

Highly Recommended!

75 to 80/100 (Consistently great Doom Metal and Traditional Metal throwback album. As the first metal album I've heard this year, I can say it didn't disappoint.)

This album fucking rips! I don't have a ton to say and I am no connoisseur of all thing DOOOM METAL and Traditional Heavy Metal. But damn! The first 3 tracks just started this album off with a slow building, monolithic power that instantly got me hooked. The Riffs are just these heavy, effective, classic-sounding giants and the guitar leads and solos and the guitar that often times is embellishing over the top of the main riffage with these sick and atmosphere-enriching lines is incredible. The solos themselves are never showy, but you can hear the deliberate and brilliant melodies of each one. The vocals are okay to AMMMAAAZING on this album. When A.A. Nemtheanga goes absolutely balls to the wall vitriolic on the very Judas Priest-y closing track "You Don't Move Me (I Don't Give A Fuck" holy shit it hits so hard! When he is singing in a more traditional metal voice its consistently good, and its never cringy, only compared to the heights he reaches on a few songs, it can get a little irritating for me in comparison.

The more traditional metal songs are hit or miss. Or rather they span from absolute bangers and some of the best metal I've heard in awhile ("Nature is the Devil's Church" and "Ruin Upon The Temple Mount" ) to just fine and somewhat forgettable.

The lyrics are a bunch Satanic mumbo-jumbo that I am not super or at all interested in. Fine for what it is.

Anyway, this was a really, REALLY solid metal album. First metal of any kind that I've heard from 2021 so far. Was a nice feeling to dive back into Metal via this very good record.
