Many of these BBC recordings have appeared on various Kinks expanded editions over the year’s so there’s nothing particularly new or essential here but it is neat we have everything pulled together in a single package complete with hilarious BBC announcer introducing the performances (“ Next up we have those long haired lads The Kinks” ! )
Oddly enough the time line jumps around here and is a little jarring, beginning rightly in 1964 and continuing chronologically through to 1968 before taking a complete u-turn and returning to 1964 and wrapping things up in 1965. My other complaint is the none inclusion of the BBC interviews that often accompanied these performances which offer some insights into what Ray and Dave were thinking at the time
Is this release essential for Kinks fans ? Not particularly
Is it good? Very much so
