The godfathers of punk, the purveyors of distortion guitar leading to metal, but often receding into pastoral English tuneage as well as hard rocking riffs. A very diverse band with a very long history and decades of top shelf music bolstered by one of the great songwriters of all time. Unique and timeless. Easily the most underrated and possibly the most influential rock band of all time. Everybody wanted to sound like the Beatles in the sixties, but listen to any rock/alt-rock from the 90s - 2010s and you're more likely to hear the Kinks at its core.

Their early work is influential in being probably one of the earliest examples of protopunk, but they vastly changed as the 60s went on. They became a more soft-spoken and melodic group, and it was for the better. Their late 60s and early 70s work is some of the most timeless music of the British invasion. Not a bit of it has aged poorly.

This is the second best band of the British invasion, and quite possibly the most underrated band ever. They weren't quite as good as The Beatles, but not by as far as one might think.
This may be the one band that started in the early/mid 60's and was worth listening to up till the 80's. They may not have been as good as the Beatles, but they were just as creative.
The holy trinity of the British Invasion are the The Beatles, The Stones, The Who. On an equal level are the Kinks. Dave Davies invented power chord rock. Ray is the greatest lyricist of ANY era and they created, easily, as many great songs as The Who and The Stones. If not my favorite band...oh hell. they're my favorite band. There. I said it. Please forgive me Mr. Townsend. God Save The Kinks!
