Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)
This artist is rated in the top 1% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 86.2/100, a mean average of 86.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.6/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 10.6.

The Kinks are considerably underrated in my opinion. Yet they have some amazing albums, charismatic and passionate. Exciting stuff, worth everyone's time!
I've had 20+ Kinks albums for over 30 years, and although I don't play them so often any more, they will always remain one of my favourite bands. My first ever gig in 1981 was to a Kinks concert at the Lyceum and I've seen them many times since. I think their collection of songs is second to very few artists and better than any individual album, though Arthur is pretty special.
Underrated band. They had a very long and fruitful career. Ray Davies wrote such witty lyrics. I never understood why thy weren't bigger in America. Perhaps, they sound too british, for some people.
The godfathers of punk, the purveyors of distortion guitar leading to metal, but often receding into pastoral English tuneage as well as hard rocking riffs. A very diverse band with a very long history and decades of top shelf music bolstered by one of the great songwriters of all time. Unique and timeless. Easily the most underrated and possibly the most influential rock band of all time. Everybody wanted to sound like the Beatles in the sixties, but listen to any rock/alt-rock from the 90s - 2010s and you're more likely to hear the Kinks at its core.
This is the second best band of the British invasion, and quite possibly the most underrated band ever. They weren't quite as good as The Beatles, but not by as far as one might think.
This may be the one band that started in the early/mid 60's and was worth listening to up till the 80's. They may not have been as good as the Beatles, but they were just as creative.
Dave Davis developed his tone by accident. Fed up with the clean amps of the time, in a fit of rage he mutilated an amp cone with a razorblade, thus inventing heavy metal!
Equalled anything the Beatles or Stones did in the 60's.
Honestly, To sit down and listen to a complete album from the Who, Rolling Stones, or the Kinks. Era 60's & 70's When they were all peaking. My opinion the Kinks have them all beat! Face to Face, Something Else, Arthur, And Especially Village Green. Putting them up against even the Beatles I have to give it to the Kinks. Their music has not dated. Great British Band and my favorite from 14 years old till now. If you where lucky enough to see them live only adds to their talent. Amazing Live Group. With Ray's deft hand, writing and front man performance And Dave on lead guitar, WOW!!
