This is my least favorite Truckers album. All the pieces are there and it is front-loaded with a few essential tracks. But it feels like Patterson Hood in particular had not yet embraced the deeper side of his song-writing. I don't know that they were taking themselves all that seriously yet (see, e.g., the album title). So the album, while fun, just doesn't resonate as much with me.

Just like any other Drive-by Truckers album, I have a hard time deciding which my favorite songs are, because it's always changing. Starting out, I liked the immediate accessibility and humor of "Nine Bullets" "President's Penis" and "Too Much Sex (Too Little Jesus)." But then eventually I move to the character development and raw emotion in tracks like "Bulldozers and Dirt" "Margo and Harold" and "Tales Facing Up."
This is a Patterson Hood dominated album, as all those tracks mentioned are his, but the three Cooley tracks are really just as good - "Uncle Frank" "One of These Days" and "Love Like This."
The amazing thing is that they would get even better than this over the decade to come.
