(Fascinating and mostly quite cool Indie Pop/rock album that mixes in bursts of noise, ambient droney bits and glitchy electronic elements in order to get the moods more fully across.)
IAN SWEET is mostly Jilian Medford and a couple other musicians to flesh out her vision (maybe the other people have more of an input and influence on the music, so sorry if I discredited the other poeple. From what I understand IAN SWEET is basically Jilian's baby). They've been around for a few years and they've released a couple albums prior to this one. I haven't heard them and this album is my introduction.
As far as the songwriting goes, its good and borderline great. The emotions and moods of the songs are expressed beautifully in the words. And the music accents the moods to mostly great effect. Mostly and by-and-large and other synonyms this is an indie pop album with witsful and emo vibes. But the thing that sets it apart a bit from the other similar albums I've heard is that there is a lot of integrating other genres in to the tracks to more fully embody the songs. The glitchy electronic bits come in sometimes to accent the confusion and angsty moments. The noisy and almost noise rock bits come in to accent, IDK, maybe like that internal dissonance that can take over. The big dreamy soundscapes that come in help evoke that dreamy loving feeling. It mostly works. Sometimes the transitions can come across as a harsh or awkward. Mostly solid.
This was a just a solid album. Some cool melodies and song ideas. I think if you like expansive indie pop rock, you'll like this.
