"Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land" lacks the nuance to be effective. The A side follows the theme of identifying problems in society in the world. The problem is it never goes beyond listing the problems. The lack of exploration drains them of any power or righteousness. The worst of these is "New America" with it's basic understanding negative history framed as something profound. The B side is a collection of piano ballads about a breakup. The instrumentals become completely forgettable here. The musical limpness impedes breakup emotions from striking the listener. Positively speaking, Marina uses some rather clever melodies particularly the chorus on "Venus fly Trap". The standout track is easily "Highly Emotional People". Despite it's simple piano backing, Marina's voice carries a gentleness that allows the vulnerability to hit home. Overall, weak instrumentals and basic writing prevent "Ancient dreams" from becoming a reality.
