"The Ballad Of Dood & Juanita" is an old fashioned tall tale in song form. Simpson employs Bluegrass and western music to enrich the story. In particular, Banjo and fiddle work on " Shamrock" is fantastic. Despite the enjoyable instrumentals, the album feels underwhelming. The narrative stays expected and the songwriting could have been more vivid. A change of perspective to Juanita or McClure's point of view would fleshed out the story more.
Simpson, an excellent songwriter and decent singer, tells a story in the way Willie Nelson presented Red Headed Stranger. It's good and I will definitely revisit it.
