An already wonderful record....and then those last two tracks.

I'm surprised this isn't ranked higher. A terrific record where every track is killer, an extreme rarity in the pre-Pet Sounds/Revolver music landscape. Sinnerman is the obvious highlight, a truly incredible and moving epic.

I was brought to Nina Simone by two sources: an ex-girlfriend who put Jeff Buckley's cover of Simone's lurching, offbeat a capella tune "Be My Husband" on a beloved playlist, and the scene at the end of the movie Before Sunset when Ethan Hawke's character, Jesse, puts on a live Nina Simone CD belonging to Julie Delpy's character Celine in her apartment. The film ends with her doing a sexy impression of Nina as the camera fades out. Just a lovely scene--and revealing about what Makes Nina Simone's brand of jazz-infused soul so luminous and beautiful.

Brilliantly atmospheric blues from Nina Simone. Great performances and tracks in the Billie Holiday classic, strange fruit, and the epic gospel track, sinnerman. Amazing stuff.

Highlight track: "Strange Fruit." This is the most haunting song I have ever heard. The original version by Billie Holiday is wonderful and chilling too.
