Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. In the back of an office in the Midwest, there is a poster of a cat dangling from a wire with the caption “Hang in there”. It’s meant to inspire the struggling workers to get through their days, but it’s so flat and corporate it lacks any strength. “Special” is the musical equivalent of that poster. Lizzo oozes positivity but it’s choked by overproduced vocals and formulaic writing. Subjects like friendship, queerness and body positivity are all handled at such a surface level that it misses any of the emotional core. On occasion, little bits of funk or soul will pop up but never long enough to revive the record. Like the poster, the only real inspiration that comes from how earnestly it tries and how hard it fails, there is courage in that.

Well shoot I really like it! It's fun as heck but gosh it just doesn't slap as hard as Cuz I Love You. The album cover is gorgeous.
