Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 15% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.3/100, a mean average of 74.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.2.

The first five songs are solid, the rest aren't as enjoyable. The Hip do a bit more experimenting with their sound, but they also produce one of their definitive tracks with Ahead by a Century. With the exception of some great moments this is still a good listen, but not among my favorites.

Key tracks: Gift Shop, Ahead by a Century, Don't Wake Daddy and Flamenco

Picking up where Day for Night left off, The Hip find themselves venturing into uncharted territory. Shifting away from much of the blues-rock style that influenced their earlier material, the Hip seem content to take a more laidback and 'adult alternative' approach to their sound. In some cases, this succeeds where Downie's lyrics are at their most brilliant ("Gift Shop", "Sherpa", "Put It Off"), but it also results in a fair share of duds ("Butts Wigglin", "Coconut Cream") which had not occurred on a Hip album since Up to Here.

My favourite live Hip song always was Springtime in Vienna. And Ahead by a Century is seriously one of the ten most beautiful songs in rock history. Did I a;ready say something like that? Gift shop and Flamenco are also exclelnt songs, Flamenco a very unique song in the Hip canon.

The last vital Tragically Hip album. The first half is as good as anything else they've made. Tracks 1-6 are classic Hip: Catchy, memorable, clever lyrics, subtle skill.

Good, not great. Gift shop and Ahead by a century save it.

I remember buying this as a cassette. The second side sucked mostly, except for Let's Stay Engaged. The first side had some great tracks, though, including the classic ABAC and the awesome Springtime in Vienna.
