Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

Some nice picks in here, some so-so picks, but vastly overrating Jon Spencer. I saw him during the superb Orange tour, and both that album and Now I Got Worry are great. (Was awesome to watch him play the theremin.) Acme is just not good, sorry. It's too sanitized. (Musically I mean.)
Note: I also saw Jon play with Boss Hog at a really small venue. One of the best shows ever. Hollis Queens wasn't playing in time so Jon kicked over her snare mid-song without interrupting the song. Fun stuff.

A delightfully grungy, and at times sonically scenic (meaning artists who pay a lot of attention to landscape), tour of the musical nineties. I love OK Computer (I know everyone does, but it's for good reason), Five Days in July, Nevermind, and Grace, among many of your other selections. I recently saw Wilco play live, and I was reminded during the encore of what a great album Mermaid Avenue is, especially "California Stars."
