"Only the strong survive" is Bruce Springsteen's soul covers album featuring 15 songs by artists such as Jimmy Ruffin, Jerry Butler and The Commodores. Bruce does a fine job vocally but the fact that he just basically recreates the originals without any interest in reinterpretating them means the tracks have no chance of standing up to the original recordings. And that also means that once you've heard the record there is nowhere else to go, nothing to dig deeper into. It basically just does what it says on the tin. At the end of the day Bruce plays it a little too safe and leaves the listener with a kind of so what attitude. It's an enjoyable record in it's own way but not one I will be going back to too often. A stop gap. Nothing less, nothing more.
