Put Your Back N 2 It

I found Perfume Genius from his Colbert show performance (slip away) and was immediately hooked on his whole discography. Seeing his music evolve from the timid and sad songs of his early work into the triumphant bliss of his newer work is incredible. And while the sounds on albums like "No Shape" are phenomenal, the soft and tearful tone of this album is equally great. This album stands out as an essential piece of queer music, or just music in general, in my eyes. So deeply emotional, and if I could only recommend one album from his discography this might just be it.

What depression really sounds like: longing, eternal sense of defeat, old memories feeling distant & blue and each day feeling like you're just an actor playing a role (in a second language). Has a dreamy, wispy quality that can feel a bit lacking on first listen, but it has a slow walls-coming-in-around-you power that just starts to click on repeat. Mostly full of deep yearns, but when the emotions do push their way to the surface (especially on the stunning "Hood"), it's absolutely heartbreaking. The long, slow weep in the corner compared to Too Bright's defiant battle cry.

I initially dismissed this album when it came out, but for some odd reason, I listened to it all the way through again the other day. It's a good album. I wouldn't say it's memorable, but it's good music.
