Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 68.4/100, a mean average of 66.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 67.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 17.4.

Merritt's return to the synthesiser see's him get more twee'r to an almost evil extent. Songs like My Husband’s Pied-a-Terre or I’ve Run Away to Join the Fairies will either have you break out in a nervous sweat reaching for the nearest Metallica cd or like me you'll get the joke and enjoy the ride.

If you haven’t heard of The Magnetic Fields I need to explain something. The Magnetic Fields are kind of a quirky band. Not that they are a joke band, but they write very quirky, interesting songs very much like They Might Be Giants. This album is very good but it’s not for everyone. With song titles like “All She Cares About Is Mariachi" and “Infatuation (With Your Gyration)", you can tell that they write interesting songs. This is a very good album though and it’s definitely worth giving a shot.

Decent album, showing no slacking in the song-writing stakes but it's getting very twee in here!
