Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 69.5/100, a mean average of 67.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 68.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.9.

both better and worse than I expected - a lot of great ideas and calculated songwriting, but also schticks that get old quickly

An amazing start to his career. Hit the ground running - as good as most of his later work.

Dr. Demento introduced me to "weird" al via "another one rides the bus", but i didn't really start anticipating every pop parody he did until "eat it". Nevertheless, nobody does pop parody like "weird" al. In fact, he's still truckin' along his comedic covers path while most artists he's covered have either faded into obscurity or have passed away (mj). Usually his albums are half parodies and half originals, with a lightning round parody "mash up" thrown in. No "mash up" on his debut, but the covers are pretty funny stuff -- "ricky" (from the "i love lucy" show, covering "micky"), "i love rocky road", "my bologna", "stop draggin' my car around" and "another one rides the bus". Pretty good, realized parody debut album, with the accordion as his "secret" weapon.
