Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 69.1/100, a mean average of 66.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 68.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 17.1.

"A Beard of Stars" from 1970 was Marc Bolan’s last original album released as Tyrannosaurus Rex. Mickey Finn was a new partner for Bolan but also look at other ways you see the contours of the upcoming T Rex, that would change Bolan's hippie status to a glamrock star. You’ll notice the electric guitar on several tracks, giving a significantly different mood compared to the previous albums which were dominated by acoustic guitars and conga drums.
On the other hand, there is still a lot about the classic Tyrannosaurus Rex sound, and nothing that would have suited albums like "Electric Warrior" and "The Slider". Not least a full drum kit. Also the songwriting and the arrangements lack the tightness and finish which characterize T.Rex's best period.

The highlights for me are, in particular, "By the Light of the Magical Moon", "Woodland Bop", "Lofty Skies" and of course the opening sequence "Prelude / A Day Laye".

As a whole, there are still too many "loose" songs to make this a really successful album; it is, however, a clear step in the right direction.

A Beard Of Stars was the 4th T.REX album and up to that point (1970)the best. Marc Bolan went electric on this album for the first time and the closing track Elemental Child is a masterpiece. Overall Side 2 (tracks 9-14) is better although other standout tracks are Fist Heart.....Pavilions Of Sun & Magical Moon. This was the first of 6 great albums released between 1970-74.
