Twelve years after New Wave media darlings The Only Ones broke up in 1982, Peter Perrett suddenly reappeared with a new band, The One (this one, not that one), who then released an EP entitled "Cultured Palate." That was followed by this album in 1996, after which The One also broke up. (Yes, that one.) Frankly, this is Perrett at his least disciplined, probably still abusing certain substances, and nevertheless writing a number of surprisingly good songs — and still possessing one of the more distinctive singing voices (love it or loathe it) in the business. For some reason they chose "Deep Freeze," possibly the album's weakest track, as the lead-off, but it does get better from there. They also weren't helped by their timing, since all the attention in 1996 was being directed at grunge and Britpop bands, but even so the album is somewhat spotty and inconsistent, and the band is not particularly tight or disciplined. Maybe they thought that was what the kids wanted that year, but alas, no. (Apparently they wanted Alanis Morissette, Celine Dion, and Mariah Carey, none of whom appear on this album in any capacity whatsoever.)
