When you turn on "Unloved", you immediately understand: this is music from a time when a hit could be both danceable and truly touching. The album seems to encapsulate all the emotions of the mid-90s, from a touch of sadness to the desire to simply move to the beat.
The title track, "Unloved," is a guaranteed hit that seems tailor-made to become the soundtrack of someone's personal story. It has Batyrkhan Shukenov's signature intonation: he sings in a way that makes you believe every word, even if you know it's just a beautiful metaphor. The melody grabs you from the first few seconds, and the chorus makes you want to sing along, even if you're hearing it for the first time. And the coolest part is that this song isn't about aggression or resentment, but about the quiet pain that everyone has felt at least once. It's no surprise that it has become the album's signature song.
Further, the record doesn't try to keep the "main hit" bar all the time, but rather offers different shades of mood. "Tango Girl" is light, playful, and has a clear rhythm, making you want to dance without thinking about the meaning. "Artist," on the other hand, is more contemplative and atmospheric, as if painting a picture where everything is slightly blurred, and you just feel the vibe. "Summer Rainstorm" and "Ships of Love" add romance to the album: they have a sense of travel, anticipation, and hope, which perfectly complements the music of A'Studio.
I would also like to highlight the band's sound: Baigali Serkebayev's keyboards provide a dense background, Vladimir Miklosich's bass maintains the rhythm, Baglan Sadvakasov's guitar adds texture, and Shakenov's saxophone brings the "soul" that makes A'Studio so unique. At the same time, the arrangements are not overloaded: each instrument is in its place, and there is nothing superfluous. Even the remix of "Julia" at the end doesn't feel like a random bonus; rather, it's a warm greeting from the past, a reminder of where it all started.
I also appreciate that the album doesn't try to be too serious or conceptual. It's simply a collection of good songs, each with its own unique mood: one makes you want to dance around the room, while another makes you want to sit by the window and watch the rain. And that's its strength: it doesn't require you to be a music expert, but simply shares its emotions.
Verdict: "Unloved" is a mood album that perfectly captures the spirit of the 90s without feeling outdated. If you're looking for music that can be both danceable and heartfelt, this release is definitely worth checking out.
