Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 15% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.4/100, a mean average of 73.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.8.

Great album. Even though the overall sound lacks some recording or mixing quality, it has great epic tunes. I can't really hear the rest of Wolf Parade's work. It just sounds poppy and lazy.
Kissing the Beehive is an incredible closer, using up every needed second of it's piano-driven 10-11 minutes of epic bliss. The rest of the album is at it's best, though, when it manages to do a lot with a little.

This is a little more tuneful, more prog side of Wolf Parade, not to say that it's dictionary narratives and 5-minute keyboard flourishes. But the guitar parts build more to a point, lyrics arch as on "soldier's grin" where we anticipate "what you know may only be one thing". There's an almost evil to the point-of-view or sadistic focus on this album, as in "call it a ritual" when he instructs "you said the desert will eat us alive / i said i'll make the decisions you just drive" or on my favorite track "language city": "Language City is a bad, old place / We all know / Where eyeballs float in space / We all know / We were tired, we can't sleep / It's crowded here, none of us leave".

One of 2008 Real Classics.
