This is folk done well. Folk needs to be poetic, harmonious, and above all have a musicianship that can transcend the lyric when there is nothing more that can be said by the poet. Fleet Foxes achieve this and then some. The composition of their work is evolving with their newer releases but this album was just such an incredibly complete set of catchy tunes and enigmatic lyrics and really came along just when I needed something to stretch beyond my discovery of the more mellow Iron and Wine style of folk.

Just got round to hearing this in 2018 following a recommendation from a friend. Initially sceptical but also listened to the excellent Bon Iver recently. After a couple of listens I am loving it - fairly disliked White Winter Hymnal on first listen but now find it superb.
Great harmonies and delicate sound with a nod to the Beach Boys on occasion

Great album, there is not a bad song in here and it stands alright as an ensemble. 8.6/10.

Excuse me, but this excellent album is knocked out of (my) history by the three latest Deportees albums, in the similar genre.

I'm not exaggerating to say this may be the most beautiful album I've ever heard.

The beautiful harmonies of a Simon and Garfunkel album, the whimsiness of an Alexander Desplat soundtrack, and the Alternative feel of Arcade Fire. As you can see from my top 100 chart, I'm not a fan of much music past the 70's, but this album is very refreshing.

I went through Fleet Foxes' discography in reversed chronological order and I think they finally clicked for me. From the beginning, this album hooks you. So so good.

It's easy to simply compare this to Crosby Stills Nash and Young. And the comparison is not unfair; it's lush acoustic folk with beautiful multi-part harmonies and the CSNY influence is obvious. But that does not diminish the fact that this is an amazing and accomplished album. Many bands work a full career and never release an album this good. These guys did it right out of the gate, at a very young age to boot. It's an amazing achievement.

Favorite tracks: Blue Ridge Mountains, Tiger Peasant Song, White Winter Hymnal

A rare album that tops BEA for a particular year and is also my favourite album for that same year. I get the feeling you either adore Fleet Foxes or you just don’t, I am most certainly in the adore camp. I just can’t split this album and Helplessness Blues . My Protector is my favourite FF song
