Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 14% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.3/100, a mean average of 73.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.7.

Maybe a little too long, and the songs are never quite as compelling as the experience, but what an experience it is! Tom Waits! What an electric live presence!

When I first heard this album the numerous "intro" sections got on my nerves so I used a cassette tape (remember them) and edited them out and then the album worked for me. It sounds like a live album but it isn't, it is a good album just don't like all those "Intro's"

In my opinion, nighthawks at the diner, is the album where Tom Waits finds his true voice. There were hints on, closing time, and, the heart of Saturday night, was almost there, but now Waits sounds like Waits, the croak and the slur, are there now in their fully formed state. The album itself, is a mock live record, taped in the studio to an invited audience. Still, it's extremely enjoyable, maybe just a bit overlong, but it really conjours up a barroom atmosphere. The other problem though, apart from it's length, is that even though there's no bad songs here, there's nothing great either. Everything's either ok, or good. Better of without a wife, is funny, especially the preamble before the song begins. It does all sound rather scripted though, with Waits playing up his part as the loveable drunk. Eggs and sausage is good, as is, warm beer and cold women. Best though,is the cover of Tom Faile's, big Joe and phantom 309. Good album then, but really only for true Waits' fans, but you could probably say that about all his records.
