Awesome album.
Tom waits described his new album as 'cubist funk', and on the brilliant second track, hoist this rag, you can see what he means. Real gone, is probably Tom Waits' most challenging record. It's full of clattering blues and beautiful acoustic based songs. Opener, top of the hill, is scratchy rock with Tom adding his own vocal percussion, Waits' beat box. He uses it through most of the record, and dispenses completely with his piano. Sins of my father, is an eleven minute epic, trampled rose, is excellent, as is, dead and lovely, and, metropolitan glide. Shake it, is Waits in his shambolic garage rock vein, and, don't go into that barn, at his scariest. The best track is the protest song, the day after tomorrow, it's superb. Another excellent Tom Waits album.
