Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.0/100, a mean average of 69.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 17.2.

I'm not even a Christian, but I think that it is great to hear Dylan's spiritual side. I love the funky elements, and I think that this album is refreshed by a comparative lyric simplicity. Overall, a great listen! Highlights: Gotta Serve Somebody, Precious Angel, Man Gave Names to All the Animals.

Now, I was expecting this to be appalling. My scepticism at Dylan's conversion and what I'd heard about it combined to leave me less than enthusiastic. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It's not great, but it's certainly not bad, and Gotta Serve Somebody, I Believe in You and When He Returns are good songs.

Vastly underrated. Dylan's songwriting was still incredibly strong at this point.

I am a big fan of the trilogy. It is Bob Dylan's version of gospel tinged music. You do not need to be religious to enjoy these songs. They are great tunes. Gotta Serve Somebody, I Believe in You and Slow train are my favorites.

The first in Dylan's god trilogy. Slow train coming is the most slickly produced of Bob's albums up to this point. Jerry wexler and Barry Beckett bring the best out of the one of the top group of musicians Dylan has assembled up to this point. As with the follow up to this album, saved, the lyrics are heavily religious. If you're not of this persuasion the words can be extremely grating. As for the music, it's great. Some wonderful sounds on here, especially on, slow train, (the best track on the album ), precious Angel, and the child like, God gave names to all the animals, which is set in the garden of Eden. Personally I don't think it's all great. Gotta serve somebody, is boring with lyrics that anyone could write, but there's nothing bad on here. A very good album. Underrated.

This is a fantastic album. I wonder if Bob still plays something from this album at concerts.

I'm 50 years old and are discovering Bob Dylan right now...(what planet have I been living in for the past 50..,)!!! Well.. started out as a hardrocker.. might be an explantation.. not an excuse.. ;) This album turned out to be the first one I really gave a listen.. Great songs in a good recording. And as I am a christian it rocks a little extra... :)

Had to force myself to see past the 'Dylan Christian era' comments. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was expecting a lot worse after seeing some negative reviews!
