Bessie Smith was misschien wel de eerste echte superster. Haar stembereik en -kracht is legendarisch. Ze kreeg zeer terecht de titel ‘Empress Of The Blues’ opgeplakt. Haar stem was zo intens en vol dat de toenmalige opnamebeperkingen geen afbreuk deden aan haar stem. Ook nu nog slaagt ze erin om een groot publiek te bereiken, iets wat niet van al te veel andere tijdsgenoten kan gezegd worden. Deze verzameling geeft een schitterend overzicht van haar tien jaar durende carrière. Er bestaan nog een heleboel andere, en zelfs meer uitgebreide verzamelalbums, maar dit is alvast een uistekende start om jezelf onder te dompelen in de wereld van Bessie Smith.
