It’s hard to not be a fan of Ani DiFranco. She has been, since the dawn of the nineties, relentlessly prolific, unapologetically political and personal, and has never given in to those who could have made her a bigger star than she will ever be on her own. On her own is exactly what she’s always been. 22 studio albums, all on her own label, and it’s a pretty sure bet that she’ll never sign with anyone. Not A Pretty Girl is her sixth album, in as many years. She plays everything here except for drums, and it was released at the moment when she was starting to really gain an audience as a recording artist. She jumps from genre to genre effortlessly, plays guitar as if possessed, and sings like an angel, like a demon, and everything in between.
DiFranco is not always an easy listen, but she is wildly entertaining. Not A Pretty Girl is the last of her stripped down acoustic albums…she would later start utilizing electric instruments and horns. “Light Of Some Kind” is a stunning track, while “Shy” garnered her a Grammy nomination…quite a feat for a 100% do it yourself artist. Her excellent guitar work is on display, as is her lyrical gift. This is an artist to be truly admired. She has done it all, and she has done it on her own terms, in her own way, and without the help of the corporate side of the music industry. She has never sold out, and her dedication to not only her craft and her career, but also to the causes she holds dear is beyond respectable. Not A Pretty Girl, like the rest of her work, is worthwhile for all of these reasons.

1982- COLUMBIA
Produced By CHIPS MOMAN
1. Do Right Woman, Do Right Man
2. Always On My Mind
3. A Whiter Shade Of Pale
4. Let It Be Me
5. Staring Each Other Down
6. Bridge Over Troubled Water
7. Old Fords And A Natural Stone
8. Permanently Lonely
9. Last Thing I Needed First Thing This Morning
10. The Party’s Over
The year was 1982, and Willie Nelson was on fire. His image as a pot smoking renegade outlaw was fully engaged, but Willie was not just a crazed country singer. Willie was doing whatever he wanted, and he was winning at every turn. In just six months during 1982, Nelson released six studio albums. SIX. A pair of solo records (one of which was, of all things, standards from the 1940’s), and three collaborations with Roger Miller, Webb Pierce and Waylon Jennings…while recording another album with Merle Haggard. “Always On My Mind” was brought to Merle while they were recording the Pancho & Lefty album. Haggard wasn’t interested…and Willie jumped all over the song. It became the centerpiece of his best selling album of the decade, and one of his signature songs. This release, his 27th, was a triumph.
The rest of this album is loaded with covers…and fortunately, Willie has always known a great song to record when he hears it. Aretha’s “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man”, Paul Simon’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, and even Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” (with Waylon) work surprisingly well, and helps to keep this disc interesting. He also remakes a pair of his own songs from the sixties, ending up with a solid, but overall not spectacular effort that was a massive hit…it stayed on the country charts for nearly five years. He’s in fine voice here. The main attraction is the title track, which is one of his most successful singles, but the rest is worth taking at least a listen to. It’s not his best work, but it is one of his most important albums. [First added to this chart: 05/02/2026]

1988-BMG
Produced By ED MICHEL
This is Duke Ellington's masterpiece. Recorded between 1944 and 1946, with 58 tracks, this 3 disc set is nothing short of amazing. With the best band he ever had, and a stunning selection of songs, this is one of the best collections you'll ever find from the big band era. True story...I was listening to this in my car one day and had to pull over. I wrote over 25 pages of lyrics with music spinning through my head faster than I could get it down. That's how awe inspiring it really is. If you have any like of this type of music at all, you must get this. It simply does not get any better. [First added to this chart: 04/29/2026]

2007 – HYPERDUB
Produced By BURIAL
1. Untitled
2. Archangel
3. Near Dark
4. Ghost Hardware
5. Endorphin
6. Etched Headplate
7. In McDonalds
8. Untrue
9. Shell Of Light
10. Dog Shelter
11. Homeless
12. UK
13. Raver
Burial is the moniker used by British electronic artist William Bevan, who’s long career has relied more on EP releases than on albums. Untrue is his second full length studio album, and he hasn’t made another in the fifteen years since. Which does not mean he’s been inactive…at all. Untrue is widely known as a huge step forward in the worlds of dubstep and ambient music, still gaining critical acclaim to this day. He uses a lot of R&B vocals samples, many of which are manipulated, and he has a great ability to create dark and highly emotional soundscapes. There is nothing thin or tinny about Burial’s music…these tracks are deep, layered, and often very complex. You can always hear something new in his songs, and the journey is never a dull one.
The best tracks here are “Raver”, “Archangel”, and “Near Dark”, and “Ghost Hardware” was released as a single from the album. And even though his beats tend to be somewhat choppy, they still absolutely work. Untrue is an album that rewards multiple listens, and is one that doesn’t sink in right away. But if you can be patient, the rewards here are numerous. He’s since moved on to making longer tracks, and he works well with artists like Thom Yorke, Kode9 and Four Tet. All of his work is worth hearing, but his two early studio albums, this one and his self-titled debut, are a great place to start. Burial is an important part of the history of electronic music…if it’s the kind of music you enjoy, then you will definitely want to hear Untrue. [First added to this chart: 04/15/2026]

1967 – UNITED ARTISTS
Produced By CHRIS MAXWELL & JIMMY MILLER
1. Gimme Some Lovin’
2. Keep On Running
3. Hammer Song
4. Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out
5. When I Come Home
6. It Hurts Me So
7. Somebody Help Me
8. Midnight Special
9. Here Right Now
10. Trampoline
11. Sittin’ And Thinkin’
12. Goodbye Stevie
13. Jump Back
14. It’s Gonna Work Out Fine
15. I’m Blue (Gong Gong Song)
16. I’m Getting Better
17. She Put The Hurt On Me
18. Blues In F
19. High Time Baby
20. Drown In My Tears
The Spencer Davis Group is notable for three things. It marked the beginning of the long and fruitful career of Steve Winwood (who joined the band at age 14), and a pair of important sixties hit songs, “Gimme Some Lovin’” and “I’m A Man”…both of which were written by Winwood. Steve and his brother Muff (later a well respected producer) left Davis in 1967, and the band began its rapid decent into obscurity before breaking up (for the first time) just 2 years later. Davis, who was never a star, forged ahead with reunions that never included the Winwood brothers, and which never produced another hit, until his death in 2020. And that’s about the entire story of the Spencer Davis Group. But those two songs and Steve Winwood keep them an important part of rock history.
The album Gimme Some Lovin’ was an American only compilation that is noteworthy as their American debut, and as the first album that the title track was featured on. The rest of the disc is from their first three British albums (it does not feature “I’m A Man”, which was later covered successfully by Chicago), along with the title track, which was a single only release. The last 8 songs are bonus tracks from the 2001 reissue. The original album shows the Davis Group as a capable, but unremarkable sixties blues band…there were several groups who did it better than they did. This is not bad by any means, and it’s worth hearing for the beginning of Winwood’s career, but it’s otherwise not much more than a curiosity. In the end, they were late to the British invasion, and they were minor players…except for that pair of great tracks. [First added to this chart: 04/14/2026]

1994 – LONDON
Produced By MEAT PUPPETS & PAUL LEARY
1. Violet Eyes
2. Never To Be Found
3. We Don’t Exist
4. Severed Goddess Hand
5. Flaming Heart
6. Shine
7. Station
8. Roof With A Hole
9. Backwater
10. Things
11. Why?
12. Evil Love
13. Comin’ Down
Meat Puppets have been pounding out loud and excellent music in almost obscurity since the dawn of the 1980’s. They were made famous briefly by Kurt Cobain in 1993, when he brought in Curt and Cris Kirkwood from the Puppets as guest musicians for the famous MTV Unplugged performance, on which a pair of Meat Puppets songs were performed. The next year, their eighth album, Too High To Die, became their best selling record. But the follow up, 1995’s No Joke!, fell flat, and the band the broke up for almost four years, plunging the band back to cult status. They are still at it, having released 15 studio albums to date, but they never have been, and probably never will be, stars. And they do not seem to mind that at all. They just keep on going.
Too High To Die is loaded with fast guitars and cool songs. This was their one real shot at making it big, and this disc almost got them there. “We Don’t Exist” is awesome. “Shine” is a melodic acoustic surprise, and “Flaming Heart” is all guitar goodness. Plus there is the hit “Backwater”, and “Lake Of Fire” is included as a hidden bonus track…it was one of the songs from the Nirvana show. Far from their straight up punk days of the early eighties, this album rocks, but it’s also very listenable and very good. The production by Butthole Surfers guitarist Paul Leary favors Curt Kirkwood’s playing in nothing but good ways, making this a fine guitar album. Meat Puppets have always been worth listening to…this is one of their finest moments. [First added to this chart: 03/18/2026]
