Billy Bragg and Wilco put out a couple of albums (Mermaid Avenue Vols. I and II) of songs built on Woody Guthrie lyrics. They were delightful. Now we have another round of songs, this time constructed by Jay Farrar (Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo), Will Johnson (Centro-matic), Anders Parker (Varnaline), and Yim Yames (aka Jim James, of My Morning Jacket). New Multitudes is darker than the Mermaid Avenue tracks, and the Farrar tracks stand out from the pack. Of course, I always liked Farrar better than Jeff Tweedy (Wilco, Son Volt), so I am fine with that.
