"Y con mama hablamos de Cuba y de Los tiempos del ano mil.
Y lo que te susede es por algo que te tiene que suseder."

When Cuba by The Silos was released in 1987 on a tiny indie label, so-called alt-country was not even a thing. But Cuba is absolutely not a country album. It is an alternative rock album, heavily influenced by jangly guitars and cryptic songwriting of R.E.M, with some acoustic touches that make it sound for more organic than many contemporary releases of that era. It's a stellar combination of rockers and ballads. At first glance it appears so simple, but the beauty lies in its simplicity. Walter Salas- Humara is the prime singer-songwriter, with Bob Ripe contributing two songs and providing some balance. This is a great record that sprinkles REM-style alternative rock with Grateful Dead-style country-folk.

Essential.
