This isn't really a knock on Tarpaper Sky specifically, but I'll acknowledge that this selection and rating is as much a lifetime achievement award as it is a specific comment on this album. I guess what I mean is that Rodney Crowell is one of country music's most reliable storytellers and troubadours, and as a result there isn't a significant dropoff in quality from one album of his to the next. "Oh What a Beautiful World," Crowell's tribute to John Denver, is probably the highlight here; I for one have come around to appreciate the wide-eyed, unpretentious love of mountains and wild places that John Denver brought to his songwriting. Today's world, I think, doesn't need a lot more irony or cynicism.
