If Agalloch is the depressing tranquility of winter, than Celtic Frost is the bitter anger and hopelessness of the season in question. Monotheist is a doom metal masterpiece that takes cues from black metal and a multitude of other styles but in the end finds itself standing out over its contemporaries. This style is later re-explored under Triptykon releases but they are nowhere near as cold, hateful, and immersive as the experience I found on Monotheist. “Drown In Ashes” and “A Dying God Coming Into Human Flesh” stand out on this release lyrically and sonically which conveys Fischer’s strong sense of musical maturity and development since his days with Hellhammer. Monotheist is what I’d call “what the Swans would sound like if they were a metal band”.
