Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Interesting you say that @planetneutral. I thought something similar, but more that the singing was somewhere between Neil Diamond and Scott Walker, and the songwriting (musics & lyrics) somewhere between Scott Walker and Tom Waits (edit: with a hint of Aaron Copland thrown in; and now that I say that, I definitely see the Billy Joel comparison particularly in regards to "The Ballad of Billy the Kid"). I'm not a fan of Diamond and wouldn't consider myself much of a fan of Waits either, but I do like Scott Walker, and David Ackles reminds me enough of Walker that I enjoyed this album.

At one point, I thought, "This is what would happen if Neil Diamond tried to sing Billy Joel songs." But it got even more maudlin from there.
